Whenever people talk about Katniss from the Hunger Games, I try to always point out that Buffy is a better strong female. Buffy is girly but is still strong and kicks ass, while Katniss is fairly strong, but a total tomboy. I love how Buffy shows you don’t need to be tomboyish to be a strong woman.
Okay, so forgetting for a moment that being “girly” is all about reinforced gender-related social constructions…
Katniss also has to feed her family and lives in a very poor district and doesn’t really have the resources to buy pretty clothes, makeup, or do her hair. You want her to wear fake nails and jewelry while she’s HUNTING FOR DINNER!?
They’re both awesome and female and strong and complex and compassionate and beautifully drawn.
