Seattle joins a growing number of cities officially recognizing Native American history

Columbus Day will now be known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Seattle.

The Seattle City Council on Monday unanimously approved the re-designation, which acknowledges that Native Americans were living in North America well before Christopher Columbus “discovered America” in the 15th century, Reuters reports.

The change, which will go into effect before the Oct. 13 holiday this year, marks the second major city in the U.S. to officially re-designate the day, after Minneapolis’ vote in April. (Though the city of Berkeley, Calif., ceased observation of Columbus Day in 1992.)

The change faced some opposition from some members of Seattle’s Italian-American community, who view the day as a celebration of their cultural heritage (Columbus hailed from Genoa, Italy).

The Seattle School Board voted last week to observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day on the same day in public schools.

Georgia Police Kill Diabetic Black Man After Family Calls 911 Requesting Ambulance

A woman called 911 for an ambulance because she was worried that her 43-year-old fiance Jack Lamar Roberson was having complications with his diabetes. Instead, a police car showed up, and the officers walked inside and shot him four times. Roberson was unarmed and had his hands in the air when he was shot. His whole family - including his 8-year-old daughter - saw it happen.

Last year, the same county police force was responsible for the shooting of a 26-year-old unarmed black man. All officers are on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Should Fox News figures *really* be arguing that people need to take tests to vote? If that includes basic U.S. geography, they probably have some brushing up to do themselves…

In other Fox attacks on voters, one minute they point out that “young people are not voting,” then ask, “do we want them to vote if they don’t know the issues?”

If Fox is so concerned about having informed American voters, then perhaps they should stop misleading their viewers on a regular basis.

You see, when Fox says they don’t want young people to vote, they really mean they don’t want non-Fox viewers to vote, considering the average age of their audience is 68, and that age group generally votes Republican.

It also comes as no surprise that a study of public opinion found that Fox News viewers “are particularly likely to support voter ID laws,” which primarily affect women, black Americans, and Democrats. An estimated 11% of Americans do not possess government-issued photo identification.

Other voting groups conservatives have targeted or brushed off:

Meanwhile, Fox can’t think of one Republican “who wants to take away the right to vote.”

Anderson Cooper saving a boy in Haiti during a shooting. A slab of concrete was dropped of the boys head.

Anderson fucking Cooper, everyone.
Some journalists like to be strictly observers. they don’t intervene, they don’t participate. they just document what they see, even if what they see is terrible. But the way I see it, journalists don’t exist in a vacuum. They are human beings, living and working in a very human environment. And that humanity is essential in relating to their stories. When you lose your humanity, you lose any kind of journalistic integrity you have left.

A family from Hammond, Indiana is suing the Hammond Police department for excessive force after what should’ve been a routine traffic stop turned violent. Lisa Mahone was driving with her boyfriend Jamal Jones and her two children to Stroger Hospital when Hammond police pulled her over for not wearing a seatbelt. Mahone admitted to the violation and asked for a ticket so she could continue on her way to the hospital to visit her dying mother.

Though Mahone was the operator of the vehicle and produced valid identification and proof of insurance, police demanded to see identification from Jones as well. Jones informed the officers he didn’t have ID, as he recently received a ticket. After attempting to reach into the backseat and produce the ticket from a backpack, the officers drew their guns.

Mahone’s 14-year-old son then began recording the encounter with his cell phone and Mahone dialed 911.

According to Fox Chicago
, an officer told Jones “”I don’t know you and I don’t know what you’re going to do.” Jones told the cops “That’s why I have my windows up. I’m not no harm to you right now. I got my kids in the car and you’re drawing your weapon.”

Police refused to take the ticket from Jones as ID and ordered him out of the vehicle. “Once the kids were scared, I wasn’t gonna get out of the car and leave my kids in the car,” said Jones. “He was being so aggressive.”

While Mahone was relating the story as it happened to the 911 operator, Jones demanded to see a “white shirt,” a commanding officer. The officer on the scene told Jones “Look at my shoulder dumbass. I got bars.” Video shows that after asking Jones another time if he was going to exit the car, an officer then breaks the passenger window, shocks Jones with a taser, then pulls him out of the car.

SIGNAL. BOOST.

holy fucking shit I can’t believe this. HOW IS THIS NOT ALL OVER THE NEWS. what the FUCK is happening with the police across this country.
